Mid-Century Star Gazer

This Orinda project transforms a large lot into a serene outdoor living space that captures the essence of California hillside living. The design centers around a sprawling Arizona flagstone patio, which extends towards the edge of the hill, creating an infinity effect that draws the eye out over the landscape. This seamless extension of the patio maximizes the outdoor area, making it the perfect spot for relaxing or even sleeping under the stars, just as the homeowner envisioned. The flagstone also ties in beautifully with the existing flagstone on the covered porch, maintaining continuity between the home and the outdoor space.

The plantings are deliberately kept low, using only native ground cover to preserve the open feel while allowing the remaining trees to stand out as sculptural features that frame the breathtaking eastward view. The simplicity of the plants complements the home’s mid-century architecture, which is defined by a wall of windows that now fully integrates with the expansive, thoughtfully designed outdoor area. This project perfectly balances natural beauty with architectural harmony, offering a peaceful escape that feels like a natural extension of the home.
